First Step

Jilly and I made the first step on our journey to become parents together this week. We went to the doctors to hopefully get a referral to the assisted conception unit at our local hospital. At this point in time we are keeping our options open as to exactly how we will consieve, however we want to include the clinic route, as I have polycystic ovary syndrome.

I think the biggest decision we've had to make is whether to use a known/unknown sperm donor. We have several gay friends who could be considered as possible donors, but we did not really want input from a man past conception. We have also found it hard to decide whether it is 'right' to bring a child up with no 'father figure'. Jilly's children go to their father's every other weekend and there is concern that our child will feel left out to not be going with his/her siblings. It is all very difficult, but there are plenty of male influences in our lives including our brothers, fathers and of course, Jilly's eldest son Daniel. Due to this i am not quite so concerned.

Anyway, the results of our consultation were quite positive, although the doctor was not sure about the referral process, so we are waiting to hear from them. So fingers crossed and i will keep you posted on our progress.
